Cabrera & the Blue Grotto: Boat Tour from Mallorca

Cabrera is a popular excursion destination from Mallorca. From Colonia Sant Jordi, regular boat trips can be taken there – and contrary to my expectations, the tour to Cabrera was a complete success even in high summer.

    Tips:
➜ S pend the night in the nature reserve on Cabrera
➜ Day trip from Palma to Cabrera*

    Cabrera: Popular excursion from Mallorca

Cabrera is part of an offshore archipelago south of Mallorca and also belongs to the Balearic Islands. At the same time, the island of Cabrera is a nature reserve. And a popular destination for excursions from Mallorca! So the chances seemed high to be overrun by crowds of tourists.

The island of Cabrera can be reached from Colonia Sant Jordi by various boat trips

    By boat to Cabrera

In the high season there are several trips daily. Our tour was the only one that day that still had seats available. It takes just under three quarters of an hour to drive from Colonia Sant Jordi in the southeast of Mallorca to Cabrera. Although we were already sitting in the larger of the two types of boats on offer (50 seats instead of just 12), the ride was damp and bumpy, but just right for a breath of really fresh sea air.

    Isla de Cabrera Port
    The small pier on Cabrera

Tip: Colonia Sant Jordi is located in the beautiful southeast of Mallorca, with many beautiful beaches all around. The dream beach Es Trenc, for example, is right next door. Situated directly on the coast, Colonia Sant Jordi is a small and tranquil old fishing village with everything you need for a relaxing Mallorca vacation. So if you’re still looking for a great vacation spot, I highly recommend checking out accommodations there!

    (Almost) untouched nature on Cabrera

Arrived on the island: Astonishment. Where were all the crowds? Slowly we entered the secluded natural harbor of Cabrera. Some sailboats were lying there in the calm water, a few people were sunbathing on the small beach and otherwise: silence, silence, silence!

Activities on Cabrera: Hiking to the Mirador de Cabrera

If you come to Cabrera by excursion boat for a day trip, you have a few hours to explore the island on the longer tour. Some parts of the island of Cabrera are not open to the public, so you move with the other fellow travelers on the same trails – but you spread out relatively well on the island. For a grand view, you can hike up the fortress (Castillo de Cabrera) – and at 35 degrees in the midday sun, that’s more athletic than it sounds.

    The Mirador de Cabrera

From the observation tower of the fortress, the Mirador de Cabrera, you have the perfect view over the island and the turquoise sea. On the way back stop at the island bar, then swim in the clear windless water and enjoy the pure nature around you: If you can not relax on Cabrera, it’s your own fault!

At sunset: The blue grotto in Cabrera

The excursion usually includes a stop at the blue grotto, depending on the weather conditions – this is only possible when the sea is calm. And the name… I wonder where it comes from? The water is just so incredibly deep blue that it wants to suck you in.

    Sunset Cabrera Mallorca
At sunset it shines warmly into the Blue Grotto

All excursion boats stop here for swimming and snorkeling. Due to the water depth, however, this is only something for swimmers. With luck you will even meet curious rays! If you have booked the afternoon tour, you get a romantic sunset on top!

Tip: If you are not staying near Colonia Sant Jordi or are traveling by rental car, it is a bit more complicated to organize a trip to Cabrera on your own. But there are tour operators who offer complete trips to Cabrera with arrival in Colonia Sant Jordi and still stops at the beaches nearby!

Things to know about the island of Cabrera

A few random facts about Cabrera:

Making garbage forbidden! Cabrera is a nature reserve and the garbage that you bring or produce there, you have to take back: There are no garbage cans on the island, because the transport of tons of tourist garbage back to Mallorca is too costly. However, the system is not quite well thought out, waste avoidance and recycling are generally not a big issue on Mallorca.

In the island bar, drinks are served in cans or disposable cups – that could also save quite a bit of trash. And resourceful tourists simply litter the toilet garbage cans in the public toilets for lack of litter garbage cans on the paths. Or throw food scraps into the bushes. Is organic. Well. A little more education and awareness for all visitors couldn’t hurt. This was completely absent from our tour, and if an island guard hadn’t happened to intercept me and enlighten me when I was looking for a trash can for my apple crate after leaving the boat – the topic of trash wouldn’t have come up anywhere else.

Cabrera used to be the Alcatraz of Mallorca. Or like this. At the time of the Spanish Wars of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century, 9000 French soldiers were taken here as prisoners of war, under the worst conditions – and a large part met their death here. You can also learn more about the history of the island in the island’s own museum!

Be sure to bring sturdy shoes! Going up to the castle in flip-flops is no fun.

Do not forget snorkeling equipment: On the beach and in the blue grotto is wonderful snorkeling and fish watching.

The island bar serves wonderful Horchata (a Mallorcan almond milk drink) with fresh almonds!

If you want to stay longer: there is a small, simple hostel on the island. Please note: It is essential to book in advance and the length of stay is limited to a few days!

Best Things to Do in Valldemossa, Mallorca

Valldemossa is one of the most beautiful places on Mallorca. The small alleyways with their colorful planted doors are a popular photo motif and a must-see on a trip to the Serra Tramuntana with its pretty villages. In this article, I’ll tell you what else you shouldn’t miss out on in Valldemossa!

Valldemossa Mallorca old town alleys flowers

    Valldemossa Charterhouse

The Valldemossa Charterhouse is the central point of the village. Behind the Charterhouse is a small, very well-kept garden, which is particularly inviting in summer. The charterhouse in Valldemossa was built and used as the summer residence of the King of Mallorca (no, not Jürgen Drews – Mallorca really was once an independent kingdom) at the beginning of the 14th century. The Charterhouse can also be visited from the inside for an entrance fee.

Save time: You can buy your ticket to the Kartause online here*.

    Chopin & Valldemossa

Even the famous composer Frédéric Chopin once stayed here, in the winter of 1838, together with his lover George Sand. However, due to his progressive tuberculosis, Chopin had to leave Mallorca and Valldemossa after just one winter. The Valldemossa Charterhouse, or Cartuja in Spanish, and the entire monastery complex, where Chopin lived, are very well maintained and well worth a visit!

There is even a street named after Valldemossa’s most famous resident.

    The beautiful alleys of Mallorca

Many people will know Valldemossa from pictures of Mallorca without realizing it: Here you can take wonderful pictures of the small picturesque alleyways, which are often beautifully decorated in summer due to the many festivities.

Typical for Valldemossa: the rough stone facades of the houses are decorated with many small flower pots.

The typical Mallorcan architecture with heavy stones and rustic wooden doors can be found everywhere. The facades of the houses are often hung with Mediterranean terracotta pots around the doors and are beautifully planted.

The many small artists’ studios dotted around the village are also wonderful photo motifs and very instagrammable.

Local specialty: The best cocas de patata on Mallorca

You should definitely try one of the cocas de patata in Valldemossa, a sweet, fluffy yeast roll made from potato flour, which is dusted with plenty of powdered sugar after baking. If you’re lucky, you’ll still be able to get slightly warm cocas fresh from the oven in the bakeries, as cocas are sold throughout the day in the high season and are therefore baked again and again. A delicious sweet with coffee, popular all over the island, but the original simply comes from Valldemossa. The best way to enjoy a coca is with a cool horchata, a kind of cold almond milk smoothie. Don’t miss it!

In addition to the bakeries on the main street that serve fresh cocas, I can recommend the following locations in Valldemossa:

Cappuccino – the classic on Mallorca is also a must in Valldemossa! See and be seen with a view of the Charterhouse!
Gelato Mossa – ice cream parlor right next to the Charterhouse. Yes, the ice cream is more expensive here, but good ice cream is expensive on Mallorca and even more so in Valldemossa. I can still only recommend it!
Aromas – a little more hidden and away from the hustle and bustle, but good food and an atmospheric courtyard!

Tips for a visit to Valldemossa

    Arrival by car

Valldemossa can be easily visited on a day trip with a rental car along the Tramuntana mountains. Please note: the winding roads on Mallorca are quite twisty, so it’s not for anxious or impatient drivers! Especially when the roads get crowded in summer and some people like to push, get overconfident or drive at a snail’s pace out of sheer fright. But the view is so beautiful – I can never get enough of it, even though I’ve driven the route so many times.

    Valldemossa sights Mallorca

    Arrival with a tour

If you don’t feel comfortable driving your rental car along that route, you can also join a guided tour. The downside: you’re completely tied down. There’s so much to discover in this part of Mallorca in particular. It’s much more convenient to be able to stop wherever you want and plan the trip yourself.

On a tour, however, you can travel at a relaxed pace—especially if you don’t like riding challenging routes in unfamiliar areas.

➜ Book the bus tour from the south of Mallorca to Port de Soller and Valldemossa* here

    Arrival by public transportation

Public transport is also an alternative: bus line 203 connects Palma with Valldemossa and Port de Soller. However, it doesn’t run that often (usually only every 60-90 minutes), so you should plan well in advance.

➜ Timetables, prices & information for line 203: Port de Soller – Valldemossa – Palma

    Parking in Valldemossa

Finding a parking space in Valldemossa is not easy, especially in summer. It is best to leave your car in one of the public parking lots along the main road. You only have to cross the road to get to the old town. At the height of summer and at weekends it can get really busy, so keep your nerve and give up hope of finding a free parking space! Valldemossa is very popular!

  • The Banys Àrabs in Palma de Mallorca

The Banys Àrabs in Palma de Mallorca

There are not many cities that always inspire me anew. My “second home” Palma for example. For me, this city has everything: not too small, not too big, the ocean always a few blocks away and a beautiful old town. No wonder tourists flood the city here in the summer. Most of the time, La Seu Cathedral is the first port of call because it stands out so prominently on the promenade.

Most people then immediately head to the city via the Passeig del Born, but those who are already here should also take the opportunity to explore a little of the picturesque and, above all, often lonely alleys behind the cathedral. In addition to authentic Palma old town flair off the beaten track, you’ll find the Banys Àrabs (Arab Baths) here – with an entrance that blends so well with the surrounding houses that you could easily miss the open door.

Insider tip for Palma: The Banys Àrabs / Arab Baths

Especially in the summer, the Arab Baths are a great place to stop by when you’re exploring Palma’s Old Town. Popular spots like the cathedral or the Plaza Mayor often get so crowded that you find yourself longing for a little peace and quiet.

Read the full guide to the most beautiful sights in Palma here

There, the Arabian Baths are a true oasis, as they are relatively unknown to tourists. It’s hard to believe that this beautiful, green courtyard hideaway is located just a few hundred meters from the bustling tourist flow in the old town! A real insider tip and perfect for those who like to be away from the crowds.

  • Barcelona: Tips for the Sagrada Familia

Barcelona: Tips for the Sagrada Familia

I am the perfect tourist. Well, from a purely economic point of view. I visit the most overcrowded and stupid tourist traps. As long as they are among the top 10 must-see sights. Whatever the cost. Going to one place and skipping the most important spots – where would we end up? Ballooning in Mexico? (It was really unique!) For a mere forty dollars to the Rockefeller Center in New York? (Dream. Best sunset ever.) Whatever. You only live once. And who knows when you’ll ever come back? That’s why I always let myself be talked into it, even when common sense (or my wallet) tells me it’s not worth it.

    barcelona

I also suffer from acute FOMO: Fear of missing out, the perpetual fear of missing something. I always open the top 10 pages of the travel guide first, and then I more or less plan to make sure I catch everything. After all, I want to have seen the most important things.

Barcelona as the perfect city trip?

That was also the plan for Barcelona. I actually know it well, but it had been so long since my last visit that it was time for a full sightseeing tour again. In my memory, Barcelona was this energetic city full of lightness, sunshine, joie de vivre and the best pickpockets in Europe (I still remember a tearful visit to a police station that was bursting at the seams with other victims). Barcelona is also easy to get to for a few days and relatively cheap. Thought.

Barcelona’s most famous landmark (and permanent construction site): The Sagrada Familia

How your own memory can deceive you: Even in the gray cold of January, Barcelona is far too crowded at the tourist highlights for there to be any joy. And at prices that even scare me as an unshakeable tourist trap invader. I would have loved to see the Sagrada Familia again from the inside, Gaudi’s eternal construction site (and here in Berlin everyone laughs about the capital’s airport – just look at Barcelona, it took over 130 years to build!) The city’s landmark. A cathedral unlike anything else that has gone before. An architectural work of art. The plan: climb one of the towers at sunset and see Barcelona in the soft light of the evening sun.

    barcelona

The only problem is if you don’t buy your ticket in time for the coveted sunset phase, only the stupidest times are left – and then in the end you don’t have the scruples to fork out 32 euros for entry to a church, especially at a time you can’t do anything with. I mean: 32 euros – hello? Without me. That’s right. Because enough is enough. And you have to say no sometimes. Even if the top 10 list remains incomplete.

    Tips for the Sagrada Familia

    • Be sure to buy tickets online in advance for the desired time. Even in the low season!
    • Good times are in the morning (it’s said to be less busy) and in the afternoon/evening at dusk. The soft light makes the interior glow and photographers love the mega view of Barcelona from the towers.
    • When you buy your ticket, you are asked which of the two open towers you would like to go up!
    • Tower on the Nativity façade – This side of the cathedral was designed during Gaudí’s lifetime. And you can walk on the upper bridge between the towers.
    • Tower on the Passion façade – This tower is higher and offers an unobstructed view of the city. This side of the cathedral was only built after Gaudí’s death. For the most part, however, this tower is considered to be the “better” one.
    • If you only want to visit the cathedral, you can also buy a one-way ticket without going up the tower for 15 euros.

  • Sa Calobra & Torrent de Pareis: Day trip on Mallorca

Sa Calobra & Torrent de Pareis: Day trip on Mallorca

It is essential to arrive in Sa Calobra before 10 a.m., says every guide book, so that you don’t find yourself in the middle of the big avalanche of coaches. Be sure to go again after 3 pm, otherwise you will experience the same thing back. Sa Calobra and the famous gorge Torrent de Pareis are well visited. All the more so in high summer, when Mallorca is bursting at the seams. Nevertheless, the Torrent de Pareis is always worth a trip during a Mallorca road trip! If you don’t want to drive, save yourself the journey through the Tramuntana and start with a boat trip from Port de Sóller to the bay of Sa Calobra.

Sa Calobra Torrent de Pareis Restaurant
In Sa Calobra there are a few restaurants, but relatively expensive and rather tourist traps. But the view is awesome!

Sa Calobra & the Torrent de Pareis: A day trip in Mallorca

On an island like Mallorca, the beach in Sa Calobra Bay isn’t particularly noteworthy: the pebbles make a day at the beach there a bit uncomfortable. But that’s not why people come here! The Torrent de Pareis is a torrential stream that flows right here through a deep gorge from the Tramuntana Mountains into the sea. However, this only happens during the colder and rainier seasons—in the summer, the Torrent de Pareis runs dry. Then you can also hike through the Torrent de Pareis gorge. However, you’ll need good hiking gear and a guide who knows the area well!

Sa Calobra bay at Torrent de Pareis Mallorca

Tip: On my Mallorca blog you can find even more travel inspiration for my absolute favorite island!

Torrent de Pareis: Hiking tours and concerts

The spacious area at the end of Torrent de Pareis often hosts concerts in the summer, with shuttle service to Palma. The sound: Bose couldn’t do it better. Without a concert, the Torrent de Pareis is rather inconspicuous. If you arrive without hiking equipment and a local guide, the more exciting part of the gorge (where it gets narrow and steep and bumpy) is impassable. So there you are, standing on heated pebbles, between rocks and what feels like two hundred and fifty busloads of tourists from all over the world, who actually don’t know what they’re supposed to find so great about a parched spot between the mountains.

Tip: If you want to explore Torrent de Pareis, don’t do it without a guide!

Sa Calobra Torrent de Pareis Mallorca
Torrent de Pareis also often hosts open-air events.

And yet, it’s spectacular. Not only the gorge Torrent de Pareis, not only Sa Calobra and not even the turquoise blue water in the Cala de Sa Calobra.

Sa Calobra Mallorca road through Tramuntana mountains

Many serpentines and the tie knot of Mallorca

The real adventure is getting there! Coming by car from Inca, you shimmy through various mountain villages, up, down, up, down, and winding through dense forest. Until your foot cramps on the clutch from constantly shifting up and down. Until you get dizzy from the many curves and long for at least twenty meters of dead straight asphalt. Actually, that would be enough excitement, but then the last wild descent begins.

In hairpin curves it goes up the last hill and then …steeply downhill. In curves, tight, tightest. No guardrails. Slopes into the deep void. No view of what’s waiting around the bend. Nothing? Oncoming traffic? A giant tour bus that fills the entire width of the street?

    Three Dream Beaches in Mallorca

Finding the most beautiful beaches or the most amazing bays in Mallorca isn’t difficult at all. Get into the rental car, open the map or turn on the navigation system – and you will always find a beautiful beach. It’s a big island. With nothing but romantic bays and dream beaches. It’s a good thing that Mallorca is always a safe bet: quick to reach, always sunny, lots of beaches. And actually, everything is a bit like home, only more Spanish.

Book a half-day catamaran tour to dreamy beaches like Es Trenc*

The most beautiful beaches and coves in the south of Mallorca

Mallorca has so many beautiful beaches that it can be hard to decide where to spend the perfect day at the beach on the island. You could easily spend two weeks in Mallorca, visiting a different beach every day, and still not see them all! Here’s a small but excellent selection of the most beautiful beaches:

    1. Es Trenc / Ses Covetes

Finest white sand like in the Caribbean. Turquoise blue water so clear that you can watch the fish around you frolicking in the water when you are standing shoulder high in the water. Framed by dunes like on Sylt. Pure nature.

beach of es trenc ses covetes mallorca

Of course, Es Trenc hasn’t been a hidden gem for a long time now. But it’s still worth a visit, especially if you keep a few things in mind:

    • Be sure to come early. From 10am on it gets really crowded.
    • Avoid weekends. Because then you have the working local population on top of the tourist crowd.
    • Don’t get excited about the prices. In Es Trenc everything is more expensive. Parking. Beach loungers. Bars.
    • Don’t forget sunscreen. This is always important, but due to the extremely light sand and the clear water you will get sunburned faster. Which you don’t even notice right away due to the light wind.
    es trenc mallorca

    Getting to Es Trenc

There are two access routes: Es Trenc/Ses Salines and Es Trenc/Ses Covetes. In Ses Salines, you’ll pass a saltworks run by Germans (tip: stop on the way back, have a coffee on the cozy patio, and buy some salt), then a really narrow gravel road leads after a while to a paid parking lot. There are no other parking options. So don’t waste time looking —just pay for the day pass with a heavy heart and park. And it’s best not to head back before the afternoon — the gravel road back to the main road turns into an adventure when you have to pass oncoming cars.

In Ses Covetes you can park in the village or on a designated parking spot a bit before the village, where a paid shuttle bus takes you to the beach entrance. Both beach sections are phenomenal, but because of the saltworks I would rather recommend Ses Salines.

    2. Cala Mondragó / Cala S’Amarrador

Cala S’Amarrador was once named the most beautiful beach in Europe by some website. It’s easy to see why, because Cala S’Amarrador has it all: clear water, fine sand, and pine forests all around. It’s also known as Cala Mondragó, since it’s part of the Mondragó Nature Reserve.

    3. Cala S’Almunia / Cala Moro

The insider tip for people who like it more adventurous. Cala S’Almunia is reached by descending a steep staircase. The bay itself is very rocky. You can also get into the water only after climbing halfway around the bay. Or you can just jump in from the rocks. There is no sandy beach, you lie on rocks or pebbles at the water entrance. Not for small children or people who don’t like to climb around. If you like, you can go one bay further to Cala Moro. But the water is worth every deprivation! Perfect for snorkelers and adventurers.

Here’s How to Get to the Dream Beaches

All of the beaches are located in southeastern Mallorca, near Santanyí, and are actually best reached by rental car.

    Rent a car in Mallorca

Mallorca is a classic destination. It’s always a good choice. And here’s what you absolutely must have on the island: a rental car. Because Mallorca is too beautiful to spend your vacation days just sitting around in one place. No, the real fun comes from hitting the road and exploring on your own. That’s the only way to get a complete sense of Mallorca. Because this island has it all: the sea, mountains, gorgeous sandy beaches, sleepy farming villages, a charming city, secluded countryside, and rocky coves—all on this little patch of land in the Mediterranean.

Tip: Getting a rental car in Mallorca

Want to avoid the hassle of renting a car from budget providers? You won’t find any shady providers here, and excellent support in the event of damage is included!

  • Ses Salines: The Salt Pans in Mallorca

Ses Salines: The Salt Pans in Mallorca

When you travel a lot, you develop the most abstruse habits. This also affects my shopping habits. If you’re sitting in the same city for the twenty-third time and have either seen just about everything there is to see or have no desire to see anything at all, you’ll have to fill your day with something else.

Then there are the Swedish cinnamon rolls that have to be brought from the one and only trusted bakery (and only there!) in Stockholm, or the hand-rolled fresh goat cheese ravioli from Mamma Lucia’s pasta shop (and only there!) in Turin, or the summer wardrobe, which is pieced together bit by bit from favorite clothing stores around the world. And in Es Trenc, it always has to be salt!
