In the east of Mallorca you will find many of the most beautiful bays on the island: perfect for a secluded beach vacation. And if you want to feel like you’re in the Caribbean, you have to head to the southeast: Es Trenc is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean!

Cala Figuera: The Cutest Fishing Village On Mallorca

Small, white sailing boats gently bobbing in the turquoise waters, a secluded bay between pine groves and the Mediterranean charm of the surrounding boathouses: Cala Figuera is one of the most beautiful places on the island. In this article, I’ll show you why you should definitely visit this romantic fishing village on Mallorca!

The history of the port of Cala Figuera

The history of Cala Figuera dates back to the 18th century. Thanks to its sheltered location and natural harbor, Cala Figuera developed into an important fishing village.

White wooden boats moored in a Mediterranean harbor

Although fewer than in the past, fishing boats, the“Llauts“, still sail out to sea in the hope of a good catch. And the boathouses around the small harbor, which are so characteristic of Cala Figuera, are still used to store boats and equipment.

What makes Cala Figuera so special?

Cala Figuera is beautiful by nature alone. The bay, which extends deep into the land, forms an absolute postcard panorama with its turquoise-blue water and the wooded cliffs all around. The many small fishing boats, the “Llauts”, also provide a nostalgic flair – you can imagine how the fishermen set out here every day just a few decades ago.

The path around the small harbor is also special: you can walk around the bay on narrow wooden piers and enjoy the cozy atmosphere between the boathouses and the Llauts. As you are almost at water level here, you should wear reasonably non-slip shoes or simply walk barefoot, as the wooden walkways can be a little wet depending on the weather.

What’s more, you won’t find any huge hotel complexes or hordes of tourists here. In the town itself, you will only find a few small, family-run hotels. Cala Figuera has managed to retain its traditional charm and is the perfect place if you want to get away from the crowds. There is also no real nightlife – this is the place to be if you are looking for a Mediterranean idyll.

The Ruta Fotografica in Cala Figuera

For passionate photographers there is the so-called Ruta Fotográfica in Cala Figuera. This route takes you along the fjord-like harbor and to the town’s most beautiful viewpoints. Here you can take impressive pictures between the boathouses and fishing boats; one beautiful motif follows the next! It is particularly atmospheric at sunset.

It is actually exactly the route you would normally take along the jetties – but still a nice indication of the best viewing angles. The information boards also provide interesting background information about Cala Figuera and its history. And Cala Figuera is one of the most photogenic locations in Mallorca anyway!

    Culinary highlights in Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera may be small, but it still has some nice restaurants and cozy bars to offer. Here are my tips:

Pura Vida – Beaches and therefore beach bars are unfortunately in short supply in Cala Figuera. The Pura Vida makes up for this not only with good food, but also with a spectacular view of the sea! And if you like, you can refresh yourself in the restaurant’s own pool.

Es Port – Charming restaurant on the harbour, specializing in fish and seafood. Best view from the terrace, especially at sunset.

Murmui – located right by the harbor – you can get delicious ice cream from one of Mallorca’s most popular ice cream makers.

    Beaches near Cala Figuera

There is no beach in Cala Figuera itself. There are also virtually no bathing facilities if you are not out on a boat yourself. (This is probably the reason why it is less crowded here). Swimming is rather difficult in Cala Figuera.

A white sailboat is anchored in a turquoise bay near some rocks

However, there are some of the most beautiful beaches and bays in Mallorca in the surrounding area! Especially if you are traveling with a rental car, you can enjoy the atmosphere in Cala Figuera for a few hours and then move on to one of the great beaches or vice versa.

These beaches are located very close to Cala Figuera:

When you visit Cala Figuera, you should also take the opportunity to explore the surrounding villages:

Santanyi – Known for its large weekly market with many Mallorcan products, Santanyi is one of the most important towns in the southeast of Mallorca. You will also find cozy pubs and small boutiques in the cute old town.

How to get to Cala Figuera

    By car

Cala Figuera is located in the southeast of Mallorca, only around 50 kilometers from Palma de Mallorca airport. Getting there is uncomplicated – the easiest way is by rental car. Booked in good time, rental cars on Mallorca are not expensive at all and guarantee you maximum flexibility to explore the rest of the island.

You can find cheap rental cars in Mallorca here

    By public transportation

You can also take one of the bus lines that run regularly from Palma and other towns on the island to Santanyi or Campos. Both towns are important hubs in the south-east of the island. From Santanyi or Campos, the 516 line will take you to Cala Figuera.

Incidentally, this bus also stops at Cala Santanyi, another beautiful bay with a good sandy beach for swimming. So you can perfectly combine your trip to Cala Figuera with a day at the beach. Just pay close attention to the timetable, sometimes the bus stops in a different order, and unfortunately it only runs every two hours.

Note: There is another small bay on Mallorca called Cala Figuera. However, it is located in the very north of the island near Cap Formentor; don’t get confused!

Staying overnight in and around Cala Figuera

Do you like the romantic atmosphere of a real Mallorcan fishing village? Cala Figuera and its surroundings are perfect if you want to spend an individual vacation on Mallorca away from the tourist crowds. You’ll find small hotels or vacation apartments in the town itself, as well as great fincas further afield. And the most beautiful bays on the island are right on your doorstep, so to speak!

Discovering Mallorca on a hot air balloon ride

Burner with fire hot air balloon

Clink. The glasses clink as we toast. Actually, I could have used that sip of cava before takeoff rather than while we were up in the air high above Felanitx. Admittedly, as a flight attendant, I’m probably a little less afraid because of my job, and I’d already completed my first hot-air balloon ride back in Mexico. Still, ballooning isn’t exactly an everyday experience, and it’s definitely exciting.

A perfect start into the new year on Mallorca

We float silently over Felanitx toward the sunrise, the silence broken only by the hiss of the burner when our pilot, Jordi, adds a bit more hot air. It’s crazy—we’re just standing in a basket several hundred meters above the ground, enjoying the view over the island in perfect weather. I thought once again that nothing could surprise me in Mallorca anymore, since I’ve already seen so much of the island—but I was wrong.

The start of the new year couldn’t have been more beautiful. By the way, the four of us didn’t only celebrate the start of the new year, but also the birthday of my dear friend Sandra, who happened to be on the island – and the a balloon ride was the perfect birthday surprise! Maybe you want to celebrate something special on Mallorca, too? Birthdays, marriage proposals, everything is possible! FAQ about hot air ballooning in Mallorca

What is the route of the hot air balloon?

The route depends on the wind conditions, take off is usually in the interior of the island. For example, we started a little outside Manacor and then drove towards Felanitx.

Which is better? Sunrise or sunset?

You can book the hot-air balloon ride for sunrise or sunset. Both have their advantages! At sunrise, it can sometimes be a bit hazier during the colder months, and in the summer, you have to get up really early. We met at 7:30 a.m. in January; in the summer, it’s much earlier. But you’ll be rewarded with an incredible takeoff into the rising sun. However, if you’d rather not stress yourself out with early start times while on vacation, then I recommend a sunset flight.

Getting up early for the sunrise was worth it!

    Who can go?

You should be able to get into the balloon: Helpers are there, but it can be difficult for people with limited mobility. Children should be at least 4 years old, dogs and pregnant women are unfortunately not allowed.

    Is ballooning safe?

Our pilot, Jordi—who is also the owner of the company—has over 30 years of experience in hot-air ballooning and has participated in various balloon festivals and competitions all over the world. We really felt special! The landing feels a bit bumpier, since the basket may touch the ground several times before it finally comes to a complete stop, but Jordi prepared us very well—and a little adventure is part of the fun, right?

Cava is of course only for the guests, not for the pilot 🙂

What is the best thing to wear? Do you need warm clothes?

You don’t go that high up with the balloon that it could get very cold. Besides, the burner also emits heat, so you don’t have to wrap yourself up with extra clothes. However, for safe entry and exit, you should avoid flip-flops or sandals and rather wear sneakers or other sturdy footwear.

Sturdy shoes are an advantage when ballooning, especially if you land in a field 🙂

    Where do you land?

When ballooning, you have to be a little spontaneous: You’ll land wherever it suits you. And sometimes even that becomes an adventure! For example, we landed in a field of a finca!

When is the best time to plan a balloon flight in Mallorca?

Be aware that a balloon ride always depends on the weather. Mallorca is an island and weather conditions can change quickly. If it is too windy, rainy or the visibility is too bad, the balloon stays on the ground. Jordi will contact you in time and arrange an alternative date with you.

The weather here in January was also very mixed; we had to reschedule once or twice. So it’s best to plan your trip for the beginning of your stay and book well in advance, because spots are in high demand during peak season.

How long is the balloon ride?

The trip itself takes about an hour. But plan a little more time, plus the drive back to the meeting point plus set-up, briefing etc.

Carrer Major is one of the main shopping streets of Felanitx. Here in this pedestrian zone, you can still discover really original Mallorcan stores, including some stores with handmade ceramics. Felanitx was once famous for its ceramics. Attention: During the typical extensive lunch time, the siesta, most stores are closed. They open again in the afternoon only.

Cabrera & the Blue Grotto: Boat Tour from Mallorca

    Cabrera: Popular excursion from Mallorca

Cabrera is part of an offshore archipelago south of Mallorca and also belongs to the Balearic Islands. At the same time, the island of Cabrera is a nature reserve. And a popular destination for excursions from Mallorca! So the chances seemed high to be overrun by crowds of tourists.

    By boat to Cabrera

In the high season there are several trips daily. Our tour was the only one that day that still had seats available. It takes just under three quarters of an hour to drive from Colonia Sant Jordi in the southeast of Mallorca to Cabrera. Although we were already sitting in the larger of the two types of boats on offer (50 seats instead of just 12), the ride was damp and bumpy, but just right for a breath of really fresh sea air.

Things to know about the island of Cabrera

A few random facts about Cabrera:

Making garbage forbidden! Cabrera is a nature reserve and the garbage that you bring or produce there, you have to take back: There are no garbage cans on the island, because the transport of tons of tourist garbage back to Mallorca is too costly. However, the system is not quite well thought out, waste avoidance and recycling are generally not a big issue on Mallorca.

In the island bar, drinks are served in cans or disposable cups – that could also save quite a bit of trash. And resourceful tourists simply litter the toilet garbage cans in the public toilets for lack of litter garbage cans on the paths. Or throw food scraps into the bushes. Is organic. Well. A little more education and awareness for all visitors couldn’t hurt. This was completely absent from our tour, and if an island guard hadn’t happened to intercept me and enlighten me when I was looking for a trash can for my apple crate after leaving the boat – the topic of trash wouldn’t have come up anywhere else.

Cabrera used to be the Alcatraz of Mallorca. Or like this. At the time of the Spanish Wars of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century, 9000 French soldiers were taken here as prisoners of war, under the worst conditions – and a large part met their death here. You can also learn more about the history of the island in the island’s own museum!

Be sure to bring sturdy shoes! Going up to the castle in flip-flops is no fun.

Do not forget snorkeling equipment: On the beach and in the blue grotto is wonderful snorkeling and fish watching.

The island bar serves wonderful Horchata (a Mallorcan almond milk drink) with fresh almonds!

If you want to stay longer: there is a small, simple hostel on the island. Please note: It is essential to book in advance and the length of stay is limited to a few days!

Ses Salines: The Salt Pans in Mallorca

When you travel a lot, you develop the most abstruse habits. This also affects my shopping habits. If you’re sitting in the same city for the twenty-third time and have either seen just about everything there is to see or have no desire to see anything at all, you’ll have to fill your day with something else.

Then there are the Swedish cinnamon rolls that have to be brought from the one and only trusted bakery (and only there!) in Stockholm, or the hand-rolled fresh goat cheese ravioli from Mamma Lucia’s pasta shop (and only there!) in Turin, or the summer wardrobe, which is pieced together bit by bit from favorite clothing stores around the world.
