    1. Cathedral of Palma

If you’re lucky enough to be on the right side of the plane, you’ll notice it as soon as you approach Mallorca! The cathedral of Palma (also known as “La Seu”) is simply unmissable. It towers loftily between the old town and Palma’s long promenade.

Buy tickets for the cathedral online*.

Built in the 13th century and later extended and restored several times, the cathedral is the most important sight in Palma. You can admire the two huge rose windows from the outside, but a visit inside is also worthwhile. Since the cathedral is very popular, you should book a ticket in advance!

Tip: In the summer months, you can also visit the roof terrace of the cathedral for an additional fee!

Visiting hours: Monday to Friday 10-17.15h, Saturday 10-14.15h (high season April to October) Monday to Friday 10-15.15h, Saturday 10-14.15h (low season November to March)

On Sunday and most holidays the cathedral is closed for tours.

    2. Palma’s Old Town

For the old town of Palma you should really take a day to explore all the important spots such as the imposing Paseo del Borne, the central Plaza Mayor or the market hall Mercat Olivar and the many small streets.

Many traditional stores are happy to welcome customers in the old town of Palma.

In addition to numerous branches of large clothing chains, you will still find small traditional stores as well as many cafés and restaurants in Palma, which give the island’s capital its special charm.

    3. Coves del Drac

The final show is kitschy, with musicians on small boats gliding slowly over the water of Europe’s largest underground lake, the Llac Martel, and performing the same melancholy pieces over and over again – but a visit to the Coves del Drac near Porto Cristo is an absolute classic on Mallorca!

The stalactite caves near Porto Cristo with their large stalagmites and stalactites are truly impressive! They are also the ideal excursion tip if you have already soaked up enough sun on Mallorca’s beaches and are longing for a little cooling down underground.

If you want, you can also take one of the boats to the exit.

    4. Es Trenc

It looks a bit like the Caribbean here: Es Trenc is one of the most popular beaches on Mallorca and is located in the middle of a nature reserve. Large beach stalls and littering aren’t allowed here. This is fortunate, because the approximately six-kilometer-long sandy beach with crystal-clear, turquoise-blue water is truly a place worth protecting.

Es Trenc, however, is very popular and a few tricks are helpful if you want to spend a relaxing beach day here in high season. Read more in my full guide on Es Trenc

Tip: Be sure to visit the nearby salt pans & take some Flor de Sal with you!

    5. Cap Formentor

Deep blue water as far as the eye can see, impressive rocks all around and a fresh breeze: Cap Formentor is the northernmost point of Mallorca and is not without reason called the “meeting point of the winds”. You can’t climb the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, but the view here is so spectacular that in recent years the access road to the lighthouse and the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint in front of it has had to be closed to private cars several times during the high season.

In this case, you can take one of the public shuttle buses from Alcúdia or Port de Pollensa, which stop at both the Mirador and the lighthouse. Line 334 goes to Playa de Formentor, line 333 goes to the lighthouse.

    6. Valldemossa

A little road trip to the Serra Tramuntana mountain range is a real must in Mallorca. Don’t miss a detour to the picturesque mountain village of Valldemossa: the former winter home of Frédéric Chopin still delights with its pretty alleyways and the Carthusian monastery worth seeing.

Tip: You should definitely try fresh cocas de patata in one of the traditional bakeries! Cocas de Patata are fluffy, sweet rolls made of potato flour and especially typical for Valldemossa!

    7. Fornalutx

Speaking of beautiful mountain villages: The tranquil Fornalutx was once even voted one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and is also one of the many sights that make Mallorca so great.

In contrast to the popular Valldemossa, Fornalutx is really tiny, but in my opinion even a tad prettier! You can easily explore both on the same day, regardless of whether you are traveling by rental car* or by public transport: bus line 232 connects Fornalutx with Soller (and Port de Soller), from where you can also take a bus to Valldemossa.

Tip: From the viewpoint near the parking lot and the cute Plaça España, you have a fantastic view of the valley and the surrounding peaks of the Serra Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And if you’re lucky, the countless orange trees are in full splendor and the fresh mountain air mixes with the beguiling scent of ripe oranges!

    8. Cala Mondragó

Fancy one of the most beautiful bays that Mallorca has to offer? Okay, there are many, but Cala Mondragó is also located in a large nature reserve, the Parc natural de Mondragó. So if you prefer to get moving instead of lazing around on the beautiful beach, you’ll also find great hiking and cycling trails for an exciting outdoor experience. Cala Mondragó is located on the east coast of Mallorca between Cala Figuera and Portopetro.

    9. Playa de Palma

Okay, maybe the area around the infamous Ballermann 6 isn’t your cup of tea concerning the music being played in all bars there. But firstly, Playa de Palma stretches for a whole 6 kilometers, not all of which are soaked in hits, and secondly, a visit to Ballermann 6 is almost obligatory, if only to wonder how much alcohol the human body can really take.

During the day, things are still relatively civilized at the notorious Ballermann 6.

Playa de Palma stretches from Can Pastilla to S’Arenal and is divided into 15 beach sections, each of which has a beach bar (“Balneario”) on the promenade. Probably the most famous of these is Balneario 6, with many party venues such as the Bierkönig or the Megapark within walking distance.

    10. Alcúdia’s Old Town

Alcúdia is one of the oldest settlements on the island. Around the old town center you can still walk around the remains of the old city wall from the 14th century. In the old town itself, you can stroll through the pretty streets, store for vacation souvenirs in one of the small stores or simply sip a café con leche in the cozy Plaça de la Constitució.

Tip: On Tuesdays and Sundays, the weekly market of Alcúdia takes place on the Paseo Mare de Déu de la Victòria and partly also in the old town. Worth it!

    11. Sant Elm

Located in the very southeast of the island and accessible only by a winding country road, Sant Elm is located on one of the last tips of Mallorca. Mass tourism has not yet arrived here, on the contrary.

Sant Elm is a small, tranquil vacation resort set around a beautiful bay with turquoise waters. If you like to be out in nature, you will also find beautiful hiking trails here; in addition, the popular long-distance hiking trail GR221, which leads through the entire Serra Tramuntana, starts here.

You can learn more about Sant Elm here

    12. Sa Calobra

The drive to Sa Calobra is not for the faint of heart. The road winds its way down from the Serra de Tramuntana, from an elevation of 800 meters, down into the bay. One of the curves was designed by the road engineer of the time, Antonio Paretti, to pass underneath the road itself, which is why it bears the telling name “Tie Knot.” And the hairpin bends are narrow too, so you should really be a safe driver if you take the road to Sa Calobra.

A winding mountain road meanders through rocky terrain

On the other hand, a romantic bay awaits you at the bottom and an impressive rock panorama awaits you in the Torrent de Pareis gorge.

Tip: If the trip is too tricky for you, you can also book a boat tour to Sa Calobra* and reach the Torrent de Pareis by sea.

    13. Tren de Soller

When the wooden train rattles through the mountains like that, you feel as if you’ve been transported straight back to the last century. But it’s not just nostalgic types who love the historic Tren de Sóller—often called the “Red Flash” in German—which has connected the capital, Palma, with Sóller since 1912. The narrow-gauge railway may be anything but fast, but the journey from Palma through the Serra Tramuntana to the terminus in Sóller is simply picturesque.

Tip: From Soller, you can take a historic streetcar to Port de Soller and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere at the harbor!

Book the combined ticket for the Palma – Soller – Port de Soller route by train and tram* right here

    14. Port de Soller

A side trip to Port de Soller is one of the best day trips from Palma! Even if you don’t take a ride on the Tren de Soller, Port de Soller is really worth seeing. It is the only protected port on the west coast of Mallorca and its location makes it look like a small oasis in the middle of the high mountains of the Tramuntana.

Tip: At Fet a Soller, sip on sorbet made from genuine Mallorcan oranges and enjoy the view of the harbor!

    15. Playa de Muro

Playa de Muro, between Port d’Alcúdia and Can Picafort, is one of the most popular beaches on Mallorca. Shallow white beaches and turquoise waters have ensured that many hotels and resorts with vacation apartments have settled along Playa de Muro, attracting especially families with children. Nevertheless, many sections of the beach itself are still relatively natural, sometimes you can find dunes.

Tip: One of the most beautiful beach restaurants on Mallorca, Ponderosa Beach, is particularly chic.

    16. Cavalry Mountain in Pollença

Over 365 steps, the long staircase leads up the Kavalrien Hill, which is said to commemorate Jesus’ walk to his crucifixion on Mount Golgotha, in Pollença. Each level represents one day of the year. According to legend, as you ascend each step, you should review each day of the past year; as you descend, you think of your wishes for each day of the coming year.

You’ll probably never quite succeed: especially higher up, you’ll probably be distracted by the breathtaking views over Pollença and the surrounding area. Once at the top, you can take a snack break in the café next to the small chapel.

Tip: Make sure you also take time for a stroll through the picturesque town center of Pollença and explore the small stores, galleries and restaurants. Pollença has a very special charm and is really pretty!

Many creative people have settled in Pollença.

    17. Port d’Andratx

In the hills around Port d’Andratx, the celebrity density on Mallorca is probably the highest: many well-known celebrities own a villa or a spacious vacation home here. But at some point you have to come down from your hill and so in Port d’Andratx it’s see and be seen.

Picturesque harbor with boats, palm trees, and hills—Mallorca

The flair around the small harbor is sophisticated and the price level corresponding. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit because Port d’Andratx has managed to retain the atmosphere of a small fishing village despite the high density of celebrities: In the afternoon, you can still watch the fishermen returning with their trawlers.

Tip: You can buy the catch directly in the fish market hall at the harbor from Monday to Friday from 5 to 7 pm (in winter only Tuesdays to Fridays).

    18. Farmers Market in Sineu

Almost every village in Mallorca has its own weekly market. The island’s oldest farmers’ market, held in Sineu, is particularly charming. Here, in addition to the usual mix of fruit and vegetable vendors, clothing, and household goods, you’ll also find products from local producers. The market is really big and stretches every Wednesday through the cozy streets of the old town of Sineu.

Tip: Get up early, as the market starts at 8 am and ends at 1.30 pm.

    19. Jardines de Alfabia

The Jardines de Alfabia are a true green oasis at the foot of the Serra Tramuntana near Bunyola. Around the mansion, built in the 12th century, you will find an intricate garden with many exotic plants and animals like on a typical Mallorcan finca.

History buffs will also get their money’s worth here: In the Jardines de Alfabia you can find traces of Moorish rule in Mallorca at every turn.

    20. Cala S’Almunia

For a long time it was an insider tip, the secluded bay between rough rocks, surrounded by fragrant pine forests. But Cala S’Almunia is still beautiful, even if you are not so alone here anymore. Next door, by the way, is the now often overflowing Caló des Moro, which can only be reached by water or by a small hiking trail.

Tip: If both bays are too crowded for you, there are numerous alternatives: The southeast of Mallorca offers many other great bays such as Cala Lombards, Cala Figuera and Cala Mondragó.

  • The Ultimate Guide to Es Trenc Beach, Mallorca

The Ultimate Guide to Es Trenc Beach, Mallorca

Es Trenc is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. With its turquoise blue, crystal clear water and light sand, Es Trenc almost feels like the Caribbean. I’ll tell you the best way to get to Es Trenc, and what you should definitely keep in mind so you’ll be as excited about this dream beach as I am.

    Top Tips for Es Trenc:

    • It’s best to stay right nearby! You can find accommodations near Es Trenc in Ses Covetes or Colonia Sant Jordi
    • If you are coming from out of town: arrive early; if you are coming by car, parking spaces are scarce
    • Don’t forget sun protection!

Es Trenc: White sand and turquoise water

    Es Trenc: Mallorca’s Caribbean beach

Es Trenc beach is located in the southeast of Mallorca, between Sa Rapità and Colonia Sant Jordi. Situated in a nature reserve, Es Trenc is really a special place. Only with a few simple beach huts and old bunkers, the wide, light sandy beach stretches for almost 10 km. You can walk far into the sea, the beach is very shallow. Often there are only little waves, so you can swim here well with children.

By the way, here you can find even more great locations and insider tips on my favorite island Mallorca: All about Mallorca

The water is usually so clear that you can watch the fish swim around your legs. I also always think that it is particularly good to float in the sea here, because the water is saltier than elsewhere on Mallorca.

The salt flats of Es Trenc

Whether this is true, I don’t know – but in any case, just behind the beach are the salt flats of Es Trenc, where sea salt is still extracted by hand from the large basins. A side trip here is worth it! The Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc in its beautiful tins is a great souvenir and their pretty shop is a good place to take a little break.

    Nature reserve around Es Trenc

Nature conservation plays a big role in Es Trenc. In order to keep the beach as natural as possible, washed up seaweed is not removed here, unlike at many other beaches on the island. In somesplaces, the beach may then look less Caribbean, but there is usually always a section that is free of sea grass.

Nature reserve with dunes in Es Trenc Mallorca
Behind the beach: nothing but dunes

Garbage is also a hot topic in Es Trenc. There are no trash cans, only a few at the beach stalls; everyone is required to take their trash back with them. It’s a nice idea, but there’s little real evidence of it. No signs, no nothing. And so some visitors just dispose of their trash anywhere. Glass bottles are prohibited, but this is also communicated rather poorly.

    By boat to Es Trenc

Es Trenc is also a popular destination for sailboats, catamarans and yachts. In midsummer, unfortunately, this gets a bit out of hand, and occasionally one or another jet ski driver disturbs a bit the relaxing atmosphere. However, the further you get towards Ses Covetes, the quieter it gets, as most boats tend to anchor off Ses Salines. If you ever have the opportunity to explore the area around Es Trenc from the water, do it! A boat ride in turquoise blue sea is an experience you won’t forget.

In Mallorca you can easily rent small boats by yourself, even without a boating license. If you don’t feel up to it or want to save money, you can join an organized tour.

    Nudism in Es Trenc

Somewhere in Es Trenc, by the way, there is an official nudist section. I never really found out exactly where that was. Towards Ses Covetes you will notice more nudists. The atmosphere is always quite relaxed, if you want to go skinny dipping and get a tan without tan lines – go for it! If you’re not up to it, then just leave your bathing suit on, no worries!

Es Trenc in Mallorca: Is it worth it?

Unfortunately, like so many beautiful spots on the island, Es Trenc is no longer a real insider tip. Many people think that Es Trenc is completely overrated and are annoyed by the mass of people, the arduous journey, the sometimes adventurous parking situation and the horrendous prices. I partly agree, because in July and August it can be anything but idyllic in Es Trenc. Nevertheless, Es Trenc is still beautiful and definitely one of the beaches you should check out while on the island!

A white sandy beach with a turquoise-blue sea and a clear sky
You don’t always find the beach of Es Trenc that empty: I’ll tell you the secret!

By the way, the area around Es Trenc is also a good idea if you want to spend a few chilled days on the island with lots of sun and time on the beach. The nearby Colonia Sant Jordi, for example, is a nice small village with cozy bars and restaurants. From here you can also walk to Es Trenc.

How to get there from Campos

Es Trenc is located in the middle of a nature reserve. There are only two accesses to the beach: one in Ses Covetes, the other in Ses Salines. Almost no matter which direction you come from, head to Campos first. From there, both accesses are signposted: Es Trenc Ses Salines and Es Trenc Ses Covetes.

General tip for Mallorca: A hire car is the best way to get to the most beautiful corners of the island!
Book a hire car for Mallorca here*

    Parking in Ses Salines

If you opt for Ses Salines, you will also come across the salt pans of Es Trenc – a short stop here is worthwhile! Continue following the signs and you will eventually reach the large parking lot Na Tirapèl behind the dunes.

Parking there costs 7€ in high season, 5€ in low season.

(Don’t park off the parking lot to avoid costs. It’s almost impossible, and even if it seems like you’re here in the middle of nowhere: There are parking tickets here, too, and they can be expensive).

Pro: The beach is only a few hundred meters away and you’ll get straight to the few Chiringuitos (beach stalls), which also rent umbrellas and deck chairs.

Con: The last piece of road to the parking lot isn’t asphalted, very narrow and lined with dense bushes. Expect to lose a mirror or two, and you can’t always avoid scratches in the car. With larger cars, driving is extremely uncomfortable, even more so with oncoming traffic. If you want to leave early, you have to fight your way past oncoming traffic on the narrow access road to the beach.

The parking lot has room for only 400 cars, at the very latest from noon you won’t find a free spot in summer. Come early to get a parking spot!

Also, in my opinion, the beach section in Ses Salines is the less beautiful one in Es Trenc during the high season. There are chiringuitos here with lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent, but that and the convenient parking lot next door also ensure that this is where most people hang out.

    Parking in Ses Covetes

Ses Covetes is a small village at the other end of Es Trenc. In the parking lot Sa Barralina you’ll park a little outside the village.

Parking costs 1€ per hour, but you can also buy a day ticket for 6€.

Better be generous, because this is also being controlled. If you make it in time within a grace period of 30 minutes, you can still cancel your ticket at the parking ticket machine for 5€. Otherwise the penalty is 80€.

From the parking lot it is still about 1.5 km to the beach and on the beach itself you have to walk a bit until you get to the nicer part. Unfortunately, the walk from the parking lot in the blazing sun is not recommended for families with children and elderly persons. Therefore, ithere is actually a paid shuttle bus in summer. However, this service has been suspended due to the pandemic and won’t probably return in 2022.

A quiet village street with white houses under a blue sky
Early in the morning you can still find parking in Ses Covetes

Ses Covetes is my absolute insider tip for Es Trenc. In fact, there are a few parking options in the town itself if you get here very early. However, you should be there by 8 or 9am the latest. And don’t forget to pull the parking ticket! Just drive past the parking lot and into the town.

From here it is only a short walk to the beach.

A white sandy beach with straw hats and a turquoise sea
Es Trenc in the early morning: In Ses Covetes there is also a small beach hut with sunbeds.

    Tips for Es Trenc:

    • Arrive early (preferably before 9 am)
    • Parking in Ses Covetes
    • Pull a day ticket
    • Bring your own food & parasol
    • Don’t forget high sunscreen
    • Avoid the weekends

    Three Dream Beaches in Mallorca

Finding the most beautiful beaches or the most amazing bays in Mallorca isn’t difficult at all. Get into the rental car, open the map or turn on the navigation system – and you will always find a beautiful beach. It’s a big island. With nothing but romantic bays and dream beaches. It’s a good thing that Mallorca is always a safe bet: quick to reach, always sunny, lots of beaches. And actually, everything is a bit like home, only more Spanish.

Book a half-day catamaran tour to dreamy beaches like Es Trenc*

The most beautiful beaches and coves in the south of Mallorca

Mallorca has so many beautiful beaches that it can be hard to decide where to spend the perfect day at the beach on the island. You could easily spend two weeks in Mallorca, visiting a different beach every day, and still not see them all! Here’s a small but excellent selection of the most beautiful beaches:

    1. Es Trenc / Ses Covetes

Finest white sand like in the Caribbean. Turquoise blue water so clear that you can watch the fish around you frolicking in the water when you are standing shoulder high in the water. Framed by dunes like on Sylt. Pure nature.

beach of es trenc ses covetes mallorca

Of course, Es Trenc hasn’t been a hidden gem for a long time now. But it’s still worth a visit, especially if you keep a few things in mind:

    • Be sure to come early. From 10am on it gets really crowded.
    • Avoid weekends. Because then you have the working local population on top of the tourist crowd.
    • Don’t get excited about the prices. In Es Trenc everything is more expensive. Parking. Beach loungers. Bars.
    • Don’t forget sunscreen. This is always important, but due to the extremely light sand and the clear water you will get sunburned faster. Which you don’t even notice right away due to the light wind.
    es trenc mallorca

    Getting to Es Trenc

There are two access routes: Es Trenc/Ses Salines and Es Trenc/Ses Covetes. In Ses Salines, you’ll pass a saltworks run by Germans (tip: stop on the way back, have a coffee on the cozy patio, and buy some salt), then a really narrow gravel road leads after a while to a paid parking lot. There are no other parking options. So don’t waste time looking —just pay for the day pass with a heavy heart and park. And it’s best not to head back before the afternoon — the gravel road back to the main road turns into an adventure when you have to pass oncoming cars.

In Ses Covetes you can park in the village or on a designated parking spot a bit before the village, where a paid shuttle bus takes you to the beach entrance. Both beach sections are phenomenal, but because of the saltworks I would rather recommend Ses Salines.

    2. Cala Mondragó / Cala S’Amarrador

Cala S’Amarrador was once named the most beautiful beach in Europe by some website. It’s easy to see why, because Cala S’Amarrador has it all: clear water, fine sand, and pine forests all around. It’s also known as Cala Mondragó, since it’s part of the Mondragó Nature Reserve.

    3. Cala S’Almunia / Cala Moro

The insider tip for people who like it more adventurous. Cala S’Almunia is reached by descending a steep staircase. The bay itself is very rocky. You can also get into the water only after climbing halfway around the bay. Or you can just jump in from the rocks. There is no sandy beach, you lie on rocks or pebbles at the water entrance. Not for small children or people who don’t like to climb around. If you like, you can go one bay further to Cala Moro. But the water is worth every deprivation! Perfect for snorkelers and adventurers.

Here’s How to Get to the Dream Beaches

All of the beaches are located in southeastern Mallorca, near Santanyí, and are actually best reached by rental car.

    Rent a car in Mallorca

Mallorca is a classic destination. It’s always a good choice. And here’s what you absolutely must have on the island: a rental car. Because Mallorca is too beautiful to spend your vacation days just sitting around in one place. No, the real fun comes from hitting the road and exploring on your own. That’s the only way to get a complete sense of Mallorca. Because this island has it all: the sea, mountains, gorgeous sandy beaches, sleepy farming villages, a charming city, secluded countryside, and rocky coves—all on this little patch of land in the Mediterranean.

Ses Salines: The Salt Pans in Mallorca

When you travel a lot, you develop the most abstruse habits. This also affects my shopping habits. If you’re sitting in the same city for the twenty-third time and have either seen just about everything there is to see or have no desire to see anything at all, you’ll have to fill your day with something else.

Then there are the Swedish cinnamon rolls that have to be brought from the one and only trusted bakery (and only there!) in Stockholm, or the hand-rolled fresh goat cheese ravioli from Mamma Lucia’s pasta shop (and only there!) in Turin, or the summer wardrobe, which is pieced together bit by bit from favorite clothing stores around the world. And in Es Trenc, it always has to be salt!

Salt from Es Trenc: Genuine from Mallorca!

Well, and when I need salt again, I always get it from Mallorca. Decadent, yes, but that’s the way it is. White bread, butter and a little Flor de Sal from Es Trenc crumbled on top – simply delicious!

Salt flats in Es Trenc & shopping at Flor de Sal

On the way to Es Trenc Beach are the Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc salt pans and their factory outlet, where I managed to snag a great deal. You can also buy the salt anywhere on the island if you can’t make it all the way to Es Trenc. But this is the only place where you can see the salt flats up close and relax in the cozy courtyard with a great cup of coffee.

But you definitely shouldn’t miss Es Trenc Beach: It’s one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and many people even compare it to beaches in the Caribbean! However, you should get there early during peak season, as parking spots nearby are very limited.
